Dell Director of Systems Engineering – Extreme Scale Infrastructure (ESI) in Austin, Texas

As Director of Systems Engineering, you will lead a high-performing, high-velocity Systems Engineering team responsible for the concept, design and validation of semi-custom server and storage server solutions based on Dell EMC products. Your team will own all aspects of planning and execution of preliminary proof-of-concept activities for targeted customer

solutions and providing consultation and oversight to the end to end validation process needed to harden the solution for customer production environments and ensure supportability throughout the solution lifecycle. You will partner with multiple cross-functional engineering, marketing, sales and program management functions to ensure alignment with the broader Dell EMC technology strategy and solutions leverage. You and your team will also participate in primary research and analysis to develop highly differentiated solutions in support of the ESI semi-custom business and make specific technology recommendations to help guide and influence our market and customer strategy.

Additional responsibilities include leading new technology investigations, performing competitive analysis of the industry capabilities, and developing recommendations for the product strategy and vendor partner opportunities. The measures of success for this position are as follows: build an effective, motivated and highly engaged engineering team, achieve business results within the assigned customer base, product quality delivered to the customer, timely resolution of issues found, customer satisfaction with ESI products, and a strong sales and customer engineering relationship.

Principle accountabilities:

  • Direct the efforts of others in the achievement of the strategic and operational objectives of the group.

  • Develop long-term technology strategies based on the technical and business information they maintain. The product strategy is developed with knowledge from the industry marketing, development, manufacturing, procurement and customer input.

  • Partner and manage all related engagements with Dell planning teams (Architecture, Marketing, CTO, and Advanced Engineering).

  • Develops long-term technical relationships with the vendor base for the core technology or solutions.

  • Identifies and develops differentiation opportunities, provides technical information and makes recommendations to marketing, sales, procurement, program management, customers, and business executives.

  • Support the development of SOW/RFQ responses to the customer by working with ESI program management and sales team to ensure technically compliant and competitive responses with ownership of system configurations.

  • Work with multiple product development teams to deliver the right products for the customer base and to drive quality into the products during all phases of the product life-cycle. Work to resolve issues and add new feature requests as required.

  • Partner with the sales teams to ensure that the ESI solution team is meeting the customer expectations. Support for this includes technical consulting engagements within Dell EMC sales organization and the customer.

  • Responsible for generating intellectual property for Dell ESI.

  • Lead and/or participates as required in strategic initiatives for improvements in process, quality, and cost.

  • Manage the hiring, staffing and maintenance of a diverse and highly effective workforce.

  • Hold weekly staff and 1X1 meetings with direct reports, deliver quarterly performance review updates, establish annual goal and development plans and deliver annual performance appraisals.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience in managing a technical engineering team.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage, organize, nurture and grow a senior technical staff.

  • Demonstrated ability to drive initiatives across multiple functions in a large organization.

  • Proven ability to collaborative with peers, senior executives and internal and external customers.

  • Extensive relationship experience with end customers and technology suppliers.

  • X86 Server system design and/or Storage system design experience.

  • Previous experience in hands-on HW systems development.

  • Advanced knowledge of server architectures/hardware design and specifically in web services, telco and cloud computing environments.

  • Experience with new product development life cycle and in driving cross-functional development efforts from concept to planning to development to test to volume production.

  • The candidate should have a thorough understanding of appropriate technologies, vendor products, and competitor's offerings along with the ability to analyze options for critical elements and features in order to determine the optimal selection.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, setting priorities and holding the teams accountable to committed schedules.

  • The candidate must have the ability to work strategically with internal cross-functional teams, key suppliers, and ODMs.

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze platform requirements, architectural specifications, and help drive the business case for new products and platforms.

  • 5+ years of technical people management experience.

  • 10+ years of design experience with BSEE, BSCS, or equivalent. A technical masters degree is preferred.
