Summary of Role

SunPower is seeking an IP Paralegal/Specialist to support the Company’s Product and Intellectual Property (IP) Legal Team. Strong organizational and time-management skills are a must. This position focuses on administrative and other support to the IP team. This is a great opportunity to be part of a small, cross-functional team of talented and creative individuals.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

  • Provide administrative and other support to SunPower’s Intellectual Property (IP) legal team. Candidates should have experience with patent prosecution, trademark prosecution, docket management, maintenance fees and annuity payments, billing, and disclosure and filing requirements.

  • Assist SunPower’s marketing and advertising activities, including: reviewing marketing materials to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, as well as SunPower policies.

  • Coordinate projects with in-house and outside counsel, as well as internal clients.

  • Conduct legal and business research, provide timely and relevant information, and respond to legal inquiries.

  • Coordinate and assist with the preparation, execution and filing of formal documents for patent and trademark matters.

  • Provide administrative support and participate in department initiatives and projects, as needed.

Related Experience and Educational Requirements

Minimum requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and 4+ years of related experience

  • OR equivalent combination of education and years of related experience

Preferred Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and a paralegal certificate or a comparable combination of work experience and education

  • Advanced understanding of patent prosecution

  • Advanced understanding of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office website and on-line portals, including Private PAIR

  • Minimum 3-4 years in a law firm or in-house setting (at least 6-8 years with both law firm and in-house experience preferred)

  • Familiarity with new technologies

  • Strong business acumen and high ethical standards

  • Strong communication skills

  • Strong analytic, influencing, negotiation, critical thinking and problem-solving skills

  • Strong administrative skills and a keen attention to detail

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and high priority tasks independently

  • Enthusiastic team player – a good sense of humor, proactive self-starter and quick learner

  • Computer savvy, including proficiency in patent docket-management software, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.

  • Candidate must be legally entitled to work and reside in the United States

Other Desired Qualifications

  • Technical backgrounds, including degrees in engineering or science

  • Familiarity with patent and trademark databases, and able to conduct searches and prepare reports using on-line resources

  • Experience with review of creative output, advertising and promotional materials for compliance with internal policies, client protocols and applicable laws and regulations, such as issues involving trademarks, copyright, right of publicity, privacy, etc.

  • Experience with contentious issues

  • Advanced experience with licensing, advertising and marketing legal issues, as well as state and federal regulatory agencies, including the Federal Trade Commission

  • Must be able to engage in domestic and international travel, as needed
