This position is in the Product Development and Technical Service Organization at the Battleground Manufacturing Complex. Technical Service Engineers support sales of approximately 4.2 billion pounds of polyethylene and polypropylene annually. These materials are used in many applications such as pipe, film, sheet, carpet backing, non-woven textiles, toys, appliance and automotive components, liquid containers, high gloss containers and numerous other articles. Technical service professionals are expected to be able to combine business acumen with customer needs and requirements to achieve business goals directly.

Purpose of Job

Technical Service Engineers (TSE) are responsible for developing and managing a multitude of technical account relationships in support of maintaining and growing market share. They resolve a wide range of technical issues at the customer, working independently and usually under time constraints, and they proactively develop account relationships. We are seeking a strong individual to work in our technical services group to support polymer applications in PP and HDPE extrusion markets.


  • Work closely with various functional areas (analytical, product development, commercial development, manufacturing, logistics, customer service, business management and sales) to resolve customer issues which minimize the commercial exposure and to support problem resolution.

  • Have a range of polymer technical skills from property/structure to process/property relationship.

  • Demonstrate technical leadership via managing a portfolio of accounts, technical service, and product development responsibilities.

  • Work directly with customers to introduce new products and address customer field problems.

  • Provide timely and quality technical services to PP and HDPE injection molding customers to maintain a high level of customer satisfaction.

  • Identify new applications / markets, and assist new product development to increase company’s market share.


  • B.S. or higher in Engineering, Chemistry, Material Science or the equivalent.

  • 7+ years of experience in Technical Service or a directly related field and a material science, polymer fabrication, process chemistry background. Experience in PP/HDPE fiber, film and profile extrusion is strongly preferred. Some consideration for strong PP/PE injection molding experience. Skills/Competencies We are seeking an experienced technical service engineer with knowledge of primarily extrusion processes and applications to support ongoing sales and growth in sales volumes.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Business Acumen is a plus, with commercial development, project management, negotiation skills, and problem resolution skills.

  • Strong basic engineering skills with knowledge of polymer production and processing techniques.

  • Strong communication skills are critical to this role.

  • A demonstrated ability to be innovative and to apply technical skills to improve safety and quality, reduce costs, and increase production.

  • A proven track record in problem solving, decision making, exceeding objectives and delivering results.

  • Six Sigma knowledge is a plus, with preference given to Green Belt or higher candidates.

Other desirable traits are:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Leadership experience or participation on industry committees like ABC, ASTM, SPE.

  • Experience in a petrochemical manufacturing facility or an extruded plastic products manufacturer

This job requires up to 25% travel to customers and industry representation meetings.
